Instruction begins 5 weeks before the start of camp!

“Pre-Camp” Opportunities and additional information from our camp director, Aralee Dorough, principal flutist of the Houston Symphony
“I have selected a short but challenging mock audition rep list for our class. It is comprised several of the most commonly requested excerpts, but also a few off-the-beaten-path; less typical solo passages, (Mahler 9 and Bellini’s Norma)  to expand the base of knowledge of each performer.IMG_5567
By focusing on this short repertoire list  (as opposed to surveying the literature) we make the goal of the Mock Audition experience to be that of helping each player achieve their personal best audition.
As we all know, any audition, big or small, basic repertoire or the most difficult, presents a considerable challenge: to represent one’s very best playing in the precise 5 minutes one is allowed on the stage or behind the screen.
I was extremely gratified with last year’s 2017 Informed Flutist format when I observed EVERYONE playing on a high level and avoiding the “rookie mistakes” that are so prevalent. By the time our Mock Auditions happened on Day 4, people had been listening to each other play these same excerpts over and over, and had many opportunities to play through the list.
Expanding upon last year’s format I would like to formalize our Pre-Camp phase, by inviting each player to send me a RECORDED MOCK AUDITION ROUND for comment,  2 weeks before camp begins.
Instructions begins 5 weeks before camp with practice tips, listening suggestions and instruction by me, via a private FaceBook group page for registered participants
If the format, the great faculty–and of course–Houston’s beautiful summer-time weather — hasn’t already convinced you to come to IF2018 –I hope this added value will!”
